Hi there, My name is Samantha Cordero and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I wanted to take the opportunity to introduce myself and share the importance of therapy, specifically during adolescent years. I extend my deepest gratitude to you for taking the time to read this. I am so excited about being a part of the Frontline Counseling Center team and look forward to meeting you all!
The attached article[1] discusses the effectiveness of treatment in adolescents who are experiencing mental health disorders including, but not limited to, anxiety, depression, substance abuse issues, and eating disorders. The article presents a review of different studies on these disorders during adolescent years, with a particular focus on treatment and intervention methods. The article highlights how different treatment modalities work with various diagnoses. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Family Based Therapy (FBT) approaches were found to be most effective in studies where adolescents were struggling with anxiety, depression, eating disorders, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, and substance abuse issues. Interventions targeting mindset, mindfulness, and positive psychology were tested. Results showed that growth mindset programs, mindfulness interventions, and school-based positive psychology programs were effective in reducing internalizing symptoms like anxiety and depression.
As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who practices family-based models, CBT and Motivational Interviewing, I have seen firsthand the impact these modalities can have on a young person navigating one of the most challenging times in their life. FBT models provide youth with the support of their family and allow each person in their family system to see how their roles can impact one another. CBT helps by allowing a person to see how their thoughts can result in maladaptive behaviors and give them the power to change their thoughts, ultimately changing their behavior. Motivation Interviewing uses techniques to focus on a person’s internal awareness and will to make positive changes to their behavior.
If the information shared in this post and study speaks to you about an adolescent in your life, I invite you to schedule a consultation via our website at frontlinecounselingcenter.com to discuss any questions or concerns you might have.

All my best,
Samantha Cordero, LMFT
